Total Havoc 4 – Event Report
Southern Martial Arts fighters claimed two titles with convincing wins during a big night of Muay Thai & MMA action at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre on Saturday. For one, it set up a fight for an Australian title later this year.
After claiming the ISKA interstate super middleweight belt with a strong win on Saturday, Brad Traynor has been offered a fight for a triple state title in coming weeks, and then a shot at the Australian title in November. However before the bout, Traynor will spend a month in Thailand training three times a day in the home of Muay Thai. Saturday’s title bout started in scintillating fashion with Traynor felling his opponent, Queenslander Dan Heggie, in the opening seconds with a front kick. From there on Traynor was in total control, monstering the Queenslander with powerful punches and knees to the body, resulting in Heggie throwing in the towel after the third of the scheduled five rounds.
Chad McGillick made even shorter work of previously unbeaten South Australian Mathew Johnson in the fight for the ISKA NSW super lightweight belt, knocking him out in the third round. During a tough contest McGillick got on top early with strong inside leg kicks leaving Johnson off balance and unable to unleash the full force of his attack. When he did, McGillick was fast enough to avoid the worst of the strikes, before countering effectively. Despite still recovering from a recent shoulder injury McGillick had the best of frequent grappling contests during the bout, controlling Johnson and managing to get some powerful knees into his opponent’s legs and body. McGillick threw Johnson to the floor as the pair grappled during the third round. While the South Australian had been quick to his feet when knocked down earlier in the round, this time he moved slowly and appeared hurt as he shook his head. Shortly after it was over, with a kick to the head setting Johnson up for a strong left uppercut from McGillick that knocked him down and out. The bout was fought under modified Thai rules, and McGillick has plans to switch to full Thai rules allowing the use of elbows during fights.
Also on the night Leanne Coombes of Bomaderry scored a tough super lightweight victory over tenacious opponent Traci Loca, in what was awarded the fight of the night.
Another local fighter David Freeman-Smith had a convincing victory over Ben Chynoweth of Canberra in the light middleweight section, while Sheree Gibson and Johnathan Hill had narrow points losses.
Super heavyweight Nick de Ruyter was forced to retire early in his bout with Dan Roberts after a kick to his legs injured his knee.
